Magicard Prima Printer Support FAQs

How do I install the driver?

  1. To install the Magicard driver, you need to insert the CD ROM into your computer. It should automatically run, but if it doesn’t click the ‘Start’ button and then click ‘Run’. Type “D:\autorun” into your computer’s search function if you can’t find it. 
  2. Now follow the on’screen instructions. The installation procedure is the same for Ethernet except you will be prompted to enter an IP Address. You should note that the printer is designed to retrieve a “Dynamic” IP Address. A “Static” mode and IP Address configuration can be updated via the printer’s LCD screen. 
  3. Once the driver installation is complete, connect the USB cable and restart your computer.
  4. When this is complete, you should now see the installed driver icon under the ‘Devices and Printers’ window on your computer. Your driver is now installed and ready to use. 

How do I access 'Driver Preferences Settings'?

To access Driver Preference Settings, find the Magicard Prima in the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder, right-click on the icon and select ‘Printing Preferences’. The Printer Driver contains a built-in help file (in HTML format). This help file is incredibly useful and will give you clear explanations of all driver settings. 

To view it, go to the ‘Printing Preferences’ as described above and click on the ‘Help’ button at the bottom of the window. 

How do I clear a card jam?

Sometimes you might experience a card jam in the Prima. The error code will allow you to find the location of the jam. To clear a jam: 

  1. Open the printer door and locate the ‘jog’ wheels. These are found at the end of the rotation shafts and printer rollers.
  2. Rotate the wheels until the card ejects.
  3. If cards are jamming repeatedly, carry out a thorough clean of your printer and make sure your cards are not contaminated with dust particles. Dirt and debris is one of the main reasons card jams occur. 

How do I carry out a cleaning cycle?

To run a full cleaning cycle using a cleaning card:

  1. Choose the ‘Cleaning’ option from the Prima’s LCD display and press ‘Enter’. 
  2. Once it has initiated, click ‘Start cleaning cycle’ and insert the cleaning card. Once the card has been ejected from the printer, turn it over and run the cleaning cycle again to ensure both sides of the printer have been thoroughly cleaned. 

How do I clean the cleaning roller?

You need to keep the cleaning roller free of dust and debris for the highest quality prints. To clean the cleaning roller on a Prima: 

  1. Open the printer door
  2. Remove the cleaning unit (top right module under the LCD screen).
  3. Remove any obvious dirt with your finger and then clean the surface of the roller with water. 
  4. Allow the cleaning roller to dry, and then reinsert the module in the printer. 

How do I clean the thermal print head?

To clean the Prima’s thermal print head: 

  1. Open the printer door and remove the printer ink ribbon and the retransfer film. 
  2. The print head will now be visible. You should carefully apply alcohol to a large cotton swab and use it to gently wipe the print head in a horizontal direction. 
  3. Reinsert the ribbon and film until they click into place and close the printer door. 

Keeping the thermal print head clean is essential to keep your cards printing as they should. If the print head becomes dirty, you may notice that white lines appear on printed cards. Magicard recommends cleaning the print head after 10,000 prints. 

Is the Prima upgradeable?

Yes, the Prima is upgradeble. The Prima can be specified as a single or double-sided printer with various encoding modules including mag-stripe, chip, proximity and smart card encoding. All of the individual modules can be installed separately.

How do I enable HoloKote?

To enable Holokote:

  1. Find ‘Magicard Prima’ within your computer’s ‘Devices and Printers’ folder.
  2. Right-click on the icon and select ‘Printing Preferences’ from the menu.
  3. Click on the ‘Card Font’ menu on the left-hand side and tick the HoloKote box.
  4. Click ‘Apply’ to save the settings. 

To disable HoloKote:

  1. Find ‘Magicard Prima’ within your computer’s ‘Devices and Printers’ folder.
  2. Right-click on the icon and select ‘Printing Preferences’ from the menu.
  3. Click on the ‘Card Front’ menu on the left-hand side and untick the HoloKote box.
  4. Click ‘Apply’ to save the settings.
